In recent years, the local design field has faced complex challenges: the ongoing war and its impact on everyday life; profound shifts in relationships between academia and industry, both locally and internationally; and the fragile state of domestic manufacturing. These circumstances call for a renewed reflection on the role of design in Israel and its vital contribution to innovation, security, health care, and technology. At the same time, design remains a central force in shaping local culture, in driving social change, and in giving form to the complexities of Israeli society.
The dialogue between generations of designers also emerges as a source of enduring strength within the field. It enables a renewed exploration of the discipline’s role, the development of new modes of practice, and the discovery of shared creative ground. From these challenges arises a need for an open conversation that bridges established practice and emerging innovation.
The exhibition Present Matter showcases the twenty-two finalists of the Edmond de Rothschild 2025 Product Design Award, in both established and emerging designer categories. Eleven intergenerational dialogues were formed between veteran and young creators. Together they offer a cross-section of contemporary design in Israel, reflecting a broad spectrum of practices – material, political, social, environmental, cultural, and technological. Each dialogue poses questions about the nature of design, modes of practice, pedagogy, professional growth, and the dreams that drive creation.
The Edmond de Rothschild Design Award, established by the Edmond de Rothschild Foundation, promotes excellence by recognizing established designers with a substantial and distinguished body of work, and by supporting emerging designers at the start of their careers, thereby fostering local interest in contemporary design and enhancing international exposure to Israeli design. Each year, the Foundation awards two prizes to established designers and two prizes to emerging designers, selected by a professional judging committee.
